If you're already learning Hungarian, or looking to live in Hungary, you've probably realized that choosing the right teacher can be a challenging decision. If you're considering switching instructors or are just about to start your language learning journey, the following tips will definitely help you make a more informed choice:
Choosing the Right Teacher - There are numerous platforms and websites where you can search for a Hungarian teacher, but be CAUTIOUS. These platforms often feature teachers who may not have the appropriate education or relevant experience. If quality is important to you, make sure to ask about your prospective teacher’s experience. Even for conversation practice, it’s worth finding someone who knows how to guide the discussion in a way that enhances your learning. There’s a difference, right?
If you are looking for professional help, maybe you'd like to read my intro here.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions - A professional teacher will be more than happy to answer all your questions and may even offer a consultation, where you and your needs take center stage. This is a great opportunity to focus on your specific learning objectives.
Finding the Right Price - With so many options available, everyone can find something that suits their budget. However, the cheapest lessons can often turn out to be the most expensive in the long run. Why? Because you might pay less, but if you’re not making progress, your learning journey won’t be efficient. In all cases, what you’re really paying for is the teacher's expertise. Many teachers offer payment plans, which I think is completely worth it. Respect yourself and invest in genuine language learning.
Schedule a Consultation - Discuss with your potential teacher how you can work together. A common mistake is to realize only weeks into the course that your goals and the teacher’s competencies don’t align. A responsible teacher will tailor a suggestion that fits your objectives and provide a professional learning plan.
Test Your Commitment - Before committing fully, make sure you are truly ready for the challenge of learning a new language. Once you are, consider how much time you can dedicate to practice. Ideally, beyond one or two lessons per week, you should also spend 30 minutes to an hour a day practicing. Establishing a learning routine early on can give you a significant advantage. Wondering when to start learning? The answer is now. Don’t procrastinate – start today and embark on this exciting journey. Trust your teacher, respect their work, and the rest will fall into place.

Learn the Right Way from the Beginning - With years of experience, I’ve encountered many advanced learners who can speak some Hungarian but started learning on their own. Often, they end up using incorrect language structures and struggle to form independent sentences, which severely hinders communication. Especially in the beginning, it’s crucial to build a solid foundation with a highly qualified teacher because future progress will depend on it. Remember, language learning never truly ends.
In my private lessons and group programs, I emphasize not only how to learn but also how to use Hungarian effectively. If you’re curious, I invite you to a consultation here.
