Why Choose Learn Hungarian Anywhere for Citizenship?

What makes us unique is the rare combination. Lidia, with her university level teaching degree and 9 years of certified, professional teaching experience, personally taught Ethan (and his entire family) the Hungarian lessons needed to pass the citizenship exam. Ethan, with a Master’s in Business and a BA in Communication, not only succeeded in the process as a U.S. citizen and busy entrepreneur—he also helped refined our system from the applicant’s side.

"And by total chance, through the very process, we met and are now married! That’s how real Learn Hungarian Anywhere is. No one else in the world has this story, this combination, or this proven pathway. You don’t need to go anywhere else."

Our research and language packages cost in the thousands because we do not offer a casual side lesson or a general language school package. Every case on our end requires serious, intensive effort—archival research, analysis, structured language training, and direct navigation of consular procedures. We do not just ‘open a laptop, teach you some phrases, or contract out a random teacher and say goodbye.’ This is a high-touch process where we stay with you from evaluation through submission. Our pricing reflects the hours of expert preparation and support needed to avoid rejection.

A word of caution: we’ve seen too many good people get rejections that all started the same way—with someone saying, “I can probably handle this myself.” That moment of false confidence is exactly when the costly mistakes begin and time that never comes back. This is why the moment you think you can do it alone is the very moment you need to stop and get real support.

If you are serious about Hungarian citizenship, and understand the financial and time commitment involved, we welcome you to Contact Learn Hungarian Anywhere. If you are just testing the waters or hoping for shortcuts, this program is not for you.

We remain with you through the entire process, and if you ever feel like you want more language practice before the interview, you can usually join our ongoing Hungarian group lessons at no extra cost after enrollment in the citizenship program.

You don’t have to learn the hard way. You want this done right; stop looking and complete your journey to Hungarian citizenship with us.

Who actually qualifies for Hungarian citizenship by descent?

Eligibility generally exists when at least one ancestor was Hungarian for simplified naturalization. Could be a parent, grandparent, or in some cases great-great-great-grandparent that at one point held Hungarian citizenship. Claims can sometimes proceed through ancestors from the broader Austro-Hungarian Empire if the place and time are within scope. Small facts often decide outcomes. One person’s fact pattern can unlock a straight path without learning the language while a near-identical story fails because one critical date, marriage, or naturalization happened differently or timeline requires to learn the language.

In our experience the authorities will not tell you why you get a rejection. That means you only get one clear shot at presenting your langue skills correctly and file correctly with the right documents and the right framing.

This is why we start every case with a structured evaluation and, where needed, language preparation. Our job is to line up your language skills, facts, records, and eligibility with the exact procedure that will actually pass at the consulate or in Budapest.

What documents do I need to begin?

You will need birth and marriage records for you and ancestors in the line of claim, immigration or naturalization records where relevant, and credible proof of Hungarian ancestry. Certified Hungarian translations are typically required. Success hinges on getting exact, complete, and properly translated documentation. It is very common in our experience doing this most clients we work with have ancestors who lost Hungarian citizenship and did not directly pass it on. This is the single most common point of failure for do-it-yourself attempts; you can easily fail when the documents and eligibility criteria are not correct for your application.

How long does the process take?

Timelines vary. Some files clear in under a year; others take longer due to record retrieval, translation, and office backlogs. The fastest route is a fully correct file submitted once. Rework and piecemeal submissions add months.

Do I need to speak Hungarian, and what level is required?

For simplified naturalization through a Hungarian parent or grandparent, no formal language test is usually required. For other pathways — such as applying through a great-grandparent or Austro-Hungarian lineage — you may be asked to must demonstrate basic B1-B2 conversational ability in Hungarian. This is not a classroom exam, but an in-person check at the consulate to ensure you can answer simple questions about yourself and Hungarian culture.

The exact threshold depends on your legal path and risk profile. You can review the official requirements and other wordings at your nearest consulate’s website (for example, Magyarország Nagykövetsége Washington).

Can I qualify if my ancestor emigrated decades ago?

Yes, many successful claims trace to grandparents or great-grandparents who left Hungary generations ago. However, law and history intersect in ways that matter. At certain times, women automatically lost Hungarian citizenship upon marrying a foreign national. In other eras, foreign naturalization could sever the line. Sometimes you can claim through a female line; sometimes you cannot. This is precisely why blanket advice fails and each case requires careful legal-historical reading.

Where should I apply: Budapest or my home-country consulate?

Both channels are valid, and they are usually best left separate. Filing and oath in your home-country consulate is usually more convenient logistically, everything goes to the same place. Filing in Budapest can be faster or easier if you live Eastern or Central Europe but recommended when the file is bullet-proof and the applicant is better prepared for in-person demands. Choosing Budapest because it “sounds faster” often isn't the best choice if you live in the USA.

What is the difference between simplified naturalization and naturalization?

Simplified naturalization (egyszerűsített honosítás) is the streamlined legal pathway intended for people who are Hungarian or have a direct Hungarian ancestor, typically a parent or grandparent. It removes the residence-in-Hungary requirement and is commonly filed through a Hungarian consulate in your home country. A practical, conversational check of Hungarian language ability may occur at the interview, aligned to your specific legal route and risk profile. There is no one-size-fits-all; documentation, dates, and lineage details determine how this plays out.

Naturalization (általános honosítás) is the standard route for applicants without qualifying Hungarian ancestry. It generally requires multi-year residence in Hungary, proof of integration, and a formal Hungarian language examination. This is not the pathway most ancestry-based applicants should pursue.

What is it called when I have a Hungarian parent or grandparent?

That is Verification of Hungarian citizenship. If your parent or grandparent was a Hungarian citizen, your case typically proceeds under this framework. Exact eligibility still depends on facts such as historical marriages, foreign naturalizations, and whether citizenship was legally preserved. Sometimes a female-line path works; sometimes it does not, depending on the era, when and who they married, when they left Hungary, and other statutes. This is why we start with research and evaluation, then align any language preparation to what will actually pass.

Because in our experience the law is very strict who ends up retaining citizenship, only a small percent of people we work with can truly bypass the language requirement. Everyone else must at least show basic conversational Hungarian at the interview.

What are the real benefits?

An EU passport, the right to live, work, and study anywhere in the European Union, access to healthcare and education within the EU, legal and inheritance rights in Hungary, and the ability to pass citizenship to your children. For many, it is also a meaningful reconnection with identity and heritage.

Can I do this alone?

In our experiences, 99% of the time the answer is no. Our honest opinion, based on years of cases, is that most people who attempt this entirely on their own get stuck, get rejected due to incomplete or incorrect paperwork, lose time, or are rejected for other fixable reasons.

This is why we offer structured research, precise eligibility evaluation, and, above all, language lessons integrated into the starter package to match your pathway.
