The official Hungarian Cultural Knowledge Exam is a written Hungarian-language examination administered in Budapest.
The exam was introduced as part of the social-coexistence requirement for many third-country nationals applying for a National Residence Card or EU Residence Card from January 1, 2025 onward.
This is not a conversational Hungarian test and it is not the Hungarian citizenship interview. You are expected to demonstrate knowledge of Hungarian and European history, culture, government and civic life in written Hungarian.

Your preparation should therefore be equally specific. We work through the required knowledge while making sure you can recognize the terminology, understand what a question is asking, retrieve the relevant information and express an answer in Hungarian.

Knowing the facts
is only half the problem.
You may know Hungarian history in English and still struggle with the exam. Or you may speak Hungarian reasonably well but have large gaps in the required cultural material.
That is why we do not treat every applicant the same. We look separately at your Hungarian and your cultural knowledge, then concentrate your preparation on the part that can actually cost you points.
If your Hungarian is already strong, there is no reason to spend months in a generic language program. If the language itself is the limiting factor, memorizing more history will not fix it. The preparation needs to match the person taking the exam.

What is the Hungarian Cultural Knowledge Exam?
The Magyar kulturális ismereti vizsga is a written examination used to demonstrate knowledge of Hungarian and European history and culture as part of the social-coexistence requirement applicable to many National Residence Card and EU Residence Card applications submitted from January 1, 2025 onward.
Is the Cultural Knowledge Exam taken in Hungarian?
Yes. The official examination is conducted in writing and in Hungarian. That is why effective preparation needs to address both the required knowledge and your ability to understand and answer the questions in Hungarian.
How many questions are on the Hungarian Cultural Knowledge Exam?
The official examination contains 12 questions. Two questions come from each of the six prescribed subject areas. Candidates have 60 minutes to complete the examination.
What score do I need to pass?
The examination is worth a total of 30 points. A result of at least 16 points receives a passing, or “megfelelt,” evaluation.
Where is the official exam taken?
The government examination itself is held in Budapest. Learn Hungarian Anywhere's preparation is online, so you can prepare with us before attending the official examination in Hungary.
Can I keep retaking the exam if I fail?
No. Under the current official rules, if a candidate receives a failed result three times, a subsequent application to take the Cultural Knowledge Exam must be refused. This is one reason we recommend preparing before using an exam attempt simply to see what happens.
Does everyone applying for Hungarian residence have to take the exam?
No. The requirement applies within specific National Residence Card and EU Residence Card procedures and the law contains exemptions. The immigration authority determines whether the requirement applies to your particular case. Our role is to prepare applicants who need to take the examination.
Is this the same as the Hungarian citizenship interview?
No. The Cultural Knowledge Exam is a separate written examination connected with specified residence-card procedures. Hungarian citizenship through simplified naturalization has a different language-assessment process. Learn Hungarian Anywhere offers specialized preparation for both, but they should not be confused.
What Hungarian level do I need?
The official information describes the examination as written and Hungarian-language rather than setting a simple CEFR level that guarantees success. What matters practically is whether you can understand the examination language and communicate the required knowledge in writing. We assess that before deciding how your preparation should be structured.
